Inspiration Behind the Movie
Billy Wilder and co-writer I.A.L. Diamond were inspired by the 1935 French film Fanfare of Love, which featured a similar storyline of men dressing as women to find work. The film was also influenced by real-life events, including Prohibition-era gangsters and Chicago’s infamous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.
You Might Not Know

- Jack Lemmon’s Inspiration – He based his female persona, Daphne, on his mother’s mannerisms.
- Tony Curtis & Cary Grant – Curtis imitated Cary Grant’s voice for his rich bachelor disguise, leading Grant to later joke, I don’t talk like that!
- A Hasty Rewrite – The famous closing line “Nobody’s perfect” was initially a placeholder, but test audiences loved it, so it stayed.
- Monroe’s Dress Drama – Her famous see-through dress was so tight she needed to be lifted onto the set for some scenes.
