Inspiration Behind the Movie
Writer-director M. Night Shyamalan returned to intimate, low-budget storytelling by self-financing this found-footage thriller, letting him experiment with a nervy blend of horror and humor. Developed under the working title “Sundowning” (a nod to dementia-related agitation), the film channels family anxieties and the fragility of trust between generations. While fictional, its themes reflect real-world fears around aging, caretaking, and uneasy reunions.
You Might Not Know
- The project’s early working title was “Sundowning,” referencing a real phenomenon associated with dementia.
- Shyamalan financed the film himself (about $5 million) to maintain creative control before partnering for release.
- Cinematography was by documentary veteran Maryse Alberti, helping sell the teens’ DIY, found-footage vibe.
- It became a sleeper hit, earning about $98.5 million worldwide on its modest budget.
- Shyamalan tested multiple edits (including a more “arthouse” cut) before landing the final horror–comedy balance.
Food Ideas

Ways to Celebrate
- Host a found-footage challenge: shoot short “documentary” horror clips on your phones.
- Game-night break with Yahtzee!—a winky nod for fans.
- Set a “9:30 p.m. house rule” and watch with lights low for extra tension.
- Pair it with another post-2015 Shyamalan film for a mini-marathon.
- Drop a goofy, clean freestyle “Tyler-style” rap during intermission.
