Inspiration Behind the Movie
Director Hugh Wilson was inspired by a real-life incident in San Francisco where police had to accept all applicants regardless of their background. The idea of unqualified and eccentric recruits struggling through training became the foundation for this comedy. The film also took cues from the success of Stripes (1981), adapting that style of humor to law enforcement.
