Inspiration Behind the Movie

Screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie drew inspiration from real-life criminal investigations and a headline he once read about a truck hijacking. The character of Keyser Söze was loosely inspired by stories of ruthless underworld figures, including mythic exaggerations of crime bosses. The film’s twisty structure also nods to classic noir storytelling and Agatha Christie-style mystery formats.

Filming Locations

The Usual Suspects was filmed primarily in Los Angeles, San Pedro, and New York City. The dockside scenes were shot at San Pedro harbor, giving a gritty realism to the ship explosion.
