Inspiration Behind the Movie
Hitchcock based The Birds on Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 short story of the same name. He was also inspired by real-life events in 1961 when thousands of birds in California began crashing into homes and streets due to toxic algae poisoning.
You Might Not Know
- Real Birds Were Used – Many of the birds in the film were real and trained for scenes, though mechanical and animated ones were used for complex shots.
- Tippi Hedren’s Nightmare Scene – The famous attic attack scene took a week to film with live birds, leaving Hedren exhausted and injured.
- No Music Score – Instead of a traditional soundtrack, Hitchcock used electronic sounds and bird cries for an eerie effect.
- A Secret Ending? – Hitchcock originally considered an alternate ending showing birds attacking San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.
- Hedren’s Discovery – This was Tippi Hedren’s film debut after Hitchcock spotted her in a TV commercial.
