Inspiration Behind the Movie
Director Sergio Leone, coming off The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, wanted to end his Western journey with a grand, operatic vision. He teamed up with Dario Argento and Bernardo Bertolucci to craft a suspenseful revenge saga, weaving in influences from classic American Westerns. Backed by Paramount and Henry Fonda, this was Leone’s ultimate tribute to the genre.

- Ennio Morricone’s score sold over 10 million copies worldwide—it was released even before filming began.

Filming Locations
Much of the film was shot in Spain’s Tabernas Desert and the ghost station at La Calahorra. Monument Valley, Utah appears briefly in the iconic flashback archway near Route 163. Interiors were filmed at Cinecittà in Rome. Today, the Tabernas Western Leone park and the Mini Hollywood sets remain open to visitors.
