Inspiration Behind the Movie

Director Edgar Wright and co-writer Simon Pegg were inspired by classic cop movies like Bad Boys II and Point Break but wanted to set their action-packed story in the least likely place: a sleepy English village. Wright also drew from his childhood in Somerset, where small-town life seemed oddly suspicious. The film pays homage to buddy cop films while blending in British humor and satire.

You Might Not Know

  1. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost watched over 100 cop movies. To prepare, they binge-watched classics to nail the film’s action tropes.
  2. The town of Sandford is a real police training reference. In the UK, “Sandford” is commonly used as a fictional town in police training exercises.
  3. Many actors from Shaun of the Dead return. The film is the second in the “Cornetto Trilogy,” following Shaun of the Dead and preceding The World’s End.
  4. Timothy Dalton took inspiration from James Bond villains. His sinister supermarket owner was played with the same suave menace as his Bond roles.
  5. The film’s action-packed third act was inspired by The Wicker Man. The peaceful countryside hiding a dark secret is a direct nod to the cult horror classic.

Food Ideas

  • “Greater Good” Shepherd’s Pie – A classic British comfort dish.
  • Police Donuts – A nod to cop movie clichés.
  • Church Fête Cakes – Homemade cakes like those seen in Sandford’s village events.
  • “Swan Bites” Chicken Wings – A funny reference to the rogue swan subplot.
  • Cornetto Ice Cream – A must-have, since it’s a signature in Edgar Wright’s trilogy.

Ways to Celebrate

  • Buddy Cop Movie Marathon – Pair Hot Fuzz with Lethal Weapon or Point Break.
  • Action Movie Drinking Game – Take a sip every time Angel does something overly professional.
  • Police-Themed Party – Dress as British bobbies or create a detective mystery game.
  • Swear Jar Challenge – Just like in Sandford, have a “swear box” during the movie night.
  • Cornetto Trilogy Watch Party – Watch Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End back-to-back.

Filming Locations

  • Wells, Somerset, England – This real-life town served as the filming location for Sandford. Edgar Wright grew up nearby.
  • The Crown Pub (Wells, UK) – A real pub that appears in the movie and can be visited today.
  • Market Square, Wells – Used for many of the village’s key scenes.
