Inspiration Behind the Movie

Writer and star Nia Vardalos based the story on her own Greek-American upbringing and experiences marrying a non-Greek man. Originally a one-woman stage show, the film was adapted for the big screen with the help of Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, who saw its universal appeal.

  2. It became one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies ever. Made on a $5 million budget, it earned over $368 million worldwide.
  3. The Portokalos house was inspired by a real home. The overly Greek-decorated house was based on homes from Vardalos’ childhood neighborhood.
  4. Joey Fatone actually has Greek roots. The NSYNC star, who played Toula’s cousin, is of partial Greek descent in real life.
  5. The movie had no big Hollywood studio backing. It gained popularity through word-of-mouth and became a surprise blockbuster.
