Inspiration Behind the Movie
Director Hayao Miyazaki drew inspiration from his own childhood and the rural landscapes of post-war Japan. The film reflects themes of nostalgia, nature, and the innocence of childhood, influenced by Miyazaki’s memories of growing up near a forest. The story also reflects elements of Japanese folklore, including the idea of spirit guardians of nature.
You Might Not Know
- Totoro became Studio Ghibli’s mascot. The cuddly forest spirit is now the official logo of the animation studio.
- It was released as a double feature with Grave of the Fireflies. Two drastically different films premiered together, with Totoro bringing joy after the emotional weight of Grave of the Fireflies.
- No real antagonist exists in the film. Unlike traditional animated movies, Totoro focuses on wonder and discovery rather than conflict.
- The Catbus was inspired by Japanese folklore. The creature resembles bakeneko, a mythical shape-shifting cat spirit.
- Miyazaki originally planned for one protagonist. Early concept art showed only a single girl instead of two sisters, but the story evolved to include both Satsuki and Mei.
