Inspiration Behind the Movie

American Psycho is based on Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial 1991 novel of the same name. Ellis was inspired by the excess and superficiality of 1980s Wall Street culture, blending horror with social satire. Director Mary Harron and co-writer Guinevere Turner adapted the novel with a more satirical and darkly comedic approach, toning down some of the book’s extreme violence while preserving its critique of toxic masculinity and consumer culture.

You Might Not Know

  1. Christian Bale modeled Patrick Bateman after Tom Cruise. Bale based Bateman’s eerie charm on a 1990s interview where Cruise appeared friendly but “completely vacant.”
  2. Leonardo DiCaprio was almost cast as Bateman. He was initially offered the role but dropped out, leading to Bale securing the part.
  3. The “business card scene” was done in one take. The now-iconic scene where Bateman obsesses over business cards had the actors reacting to real, surprise reveals of each card.
  4. Huey Lewis initially banned the movie from using his music. The famous “Hip to Be Square” scene almost didn’t happen because Lewis disliked the film’s violent nature. He later embraced the scene.
  5. Christian Bale stayed in character between takes. He spoke with an American accent and maintained Bateman’s mannerisms even off-camera.
