Inspiration Behind the Movie

David Webb Peoples wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s as a dark, revisionist Western that challenged traditional hero myths. Clint Eastwood, drawn to its moral complexity and grounded realism, held the script for nearly a decade before directing and starring in it, waiting until he was old enough to portray the aged gunslinger truthfully.
