Inspiration Behind the Movie

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay were inspired by the over-the-top world of NASCAR and the eccentricity of its culture. Ferrell wanted to portray a satirical, larger-than-life character immersed in the high-speed sport. The result was Ricky Bobby—a mashup of racing legend tropes and absurd comedy. NASCAR cooperated during filming, making it one of the most authentic-feeling racing comedies to date.

Filming Locations

Major filming took place at the Charlotte Motor Speedway and in other parts of North Carolina and South Carolina. The Talladega scenes were filmed at Lowe’s Motor Speedway due to easier logistics. Ricky Bobby’s home was a real mansion in the Charlotte area, adding to the film’s southern charm.
